God Prepared A Fish

“…the LORD had prepared a great fish...” Jonah 1:17 (NKJV)

This fish wasn’t like any of the other fish in the sea. Contrary to what many believe, the Bible doesn’t say it was a whale, just a very large fish. It was so big that it could swallow a prophet whole without hurting him, no chewing involved. We don’t know much about it other than that, but we can surmise a few things, knowing the nature of God and how He works. Since God never gets in a hurry, He may have taken a hundred years or more to slowly grow and transform this fish from what it had been when it hatched to what it would be when the time came for it to live out its calling. Then He sent it right where it needed to be, at exactly the right time. He left nothing to chance. He never does.

This verse perfectly describes the course of my life. God spent fifty years transforming and preparing me to live out my calling. Then, when the time came, He sent me right where I needed to be, at exactly the right time. He left nothing to chance. He never does.

Living in this world grinds us down, no matter who we are.  We can only take so much, then we are exhausted.  It is even harder when there seems to be no end in sight.  I can vividly remember what that was like, living this life as an atheist, with no hope beyond what...

Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world,” (John 18:36 NIV).  The New Living Translation words it a bit differently, “My kingdom is not an earthly kingdom.”  That doesn’t sell as many T-shirts as NOTW, which I love, but it does convey that there is far more to all...
