God Prepared A Fish

“…the LORD had prepared a great fish...” Jonah 1:17 (NKJV)

This fish wasn’t like any of the other fish in the sea. Contrary to what many believe, the Bible doesn’t say it was a whale, just a very large fish. It was so big that it could swallow a prophet whole without hurting him, no chewing involved. We don’t know much about it other than that, but we can surmise a few things, knowing the nature of God and how He works. Since God never gets in a hurry, He may have taken a hundred years or more to slowly grow and transform this fish from what it had been when it hatched to what it would be when the time came for it to live out its calling. Then He sent it right where it needed to be, at exactly the right time. He left nothing to chance. He never does.

This verse perfectly describes the course of my life. God spent fifty years transforming and preparing me to live out my calling. Then, when the time came, He sent me right where I needed to be, at exactly the right time. He left nothing to chance. He never does.

“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. Be on your guard…” (Matt 10:16-17a)

In a very real sense, the first sentence has Jesus saying, “I’m sending you out, knowing you are going to get hurt.”
